To set goals and plan treatment we first need to understand what tasks using the arm and/or leg are most difficult. A series of questions are now completed the limb(s) and considering what aspect of function is most difficult.

This may be related to caring for the arm or leg (sometimes referred to as ‘Passive-Function’) or it may be about independently using the arm or leg to perform functional tasks (sometimes referred to as ‘Active-Function’).

This process will then lead to setting goals for treatment, followed by planning the treatment that will need to be carried out. Sometimes this will be accompanied by specific treatment for spasticity (muscle overactivity and tightness similar to cramp) in the form of botulinum toxin injection or tablets to relax muscles.
